Eddie Pepperell ospite d’eccezione all’Asiago pro am Invitational, conclusasi ieri al Golf Club Asiago, e’ un ragazzo biondo, occhi chiari, un bel sorriso, fisico atletico.”Cosa vuoi da bere ? ” Gli chiedo mentre ci sediamo al tavolo del ristorante Longalaita.
Sono le 8:00 di mattina, e lui mi risponde ” un bicchiere d’acqua naturale, non freddo”, penso tra me e me:”andiamo di sicuro d’accordo, anche io odio le bibite fredde !” e ordino un’acqua non fredda.
Eddie e’ inglese, vive a Oxford e da quest’anno ha la full card nell’Europen Tour, classe 1991, passa professionista nel 2011, nel 2013 gioca già un major, The U.S. Open e prima, nello stesso anno, si classifica sesto al BMW PGA Championship a Wentworth .
Qual e’ la maggior differenza tra il Challange Tour e l’European Tour.
” I percorsi sull’European Tour sono più esigenti, nel senso che richiedono un diverso modo di colpire la palla, ci sono green duri e buche molto più lunghe”.
Quando hai iniziato a giocare a golf ?
” Ho iniziato all’età di 4 anni con mio papà e mio fratello e non ho più smesso “.
Che cosa ti piace del gioco del golf?
“Il pensiero che giocare a golf sia sempre una sfida, ogni miglioramento e’ una nuova sfida , un obiettivo da raggiungere, un goal da realizzare , penso che il golf, in questi termini, sia uno sport che richiede molto sacrificio, molta pazienza”.
Hai un giocatore che ha inspirato la tua crescita golfistica?
“Non ho un vero e proprio idolo da imitare, ma Sergio Garcia e’ sempre stato il mio giocatore preferito”.
Hai un obiettivo nella tua carriera da professionista?
” Il mio obiettivo e’ ispirare le persone, essere per loro un modello da imitare, essere tra i migliori al mondo per me significa non essere ricordato per quello che vinco ma per quello che ho trasmesso alle persone”.
Qual è il tuo ricordo preferito legato al mondo del golf?
” Da amateur quando ho vinto con il team inglese l’European Team Championship e da professionista essere stato vicino a vincere il PGA a Wentworth”.
Qual è il tuo colpo preferito?
Mi risponde guardandomi dritto negli occhi, con una luce di entusiasmo, che è contagiosa ” “Le uscite dal bunker e i ferri in generale , adoro giocarli “.
Quando sei a casa come passi il tempo libero?
” Mi piace molto allenarmi in palestra, sto lavorando per rinforzare il mio fisico, soprattutto con i pesi, uso poco gli elastici. Devo rinforzarmi per evitare gli infortuni e, soprattutto, per fare lo swing più corto e potente.
Come hai trovato il percorso del Golf Club Asiago?
” Il percorso e’ meraviglioso, adoro le buche dove un giorno puoi fare birdie e il giorno dopo bogey,la buca 11 mi ha colpito molto, il campo e’ in ottime condizioni e mi piace molto giocare qui, avete dei green molto belli e con pendenze non sempre facili da leggere”.
Finiamo di bere la nostra acqua e ci avviamo in campo pratica, “have a good round Eddie, and enjoy it !!!” Detto fatto, consegna uno score di 68 colpi …”Well done Eddie !!”.

Invitational, that ended yesterday at Golf Club Asiago.
” What would you like to drink?” I ask him when we both sit down at a table at the restaurant Longalaita.
It’s 8 o’clock in the morning and he answers ” a glass of still water room temperature” and i think that we could go along together since i also hate iced cold water! So i order the same.
Eddie is british, he lives in oxford and since this year he has gained the full card for the European tour.
He was Born in 1991 and has become a professional golfer in 2011. In 2013 he already plays a major – the U.S. Open – and during the same year he gets himself 6th at the BMW PGA Championship in Wentworth.
What is the big difference between the Challange tour and the European tour?
” The European tour is more demanding, you need to hit the ball in a whole different way, you have hard greens and the holes are much longer”.
When did you start playing golf?
” I was 4 years old and i started with my father , i never stopped since”.
What do you like of golfing ?
” The fact that playing is always a challenge – every improvement is a challenge – a goal to achieve
I think that golf on these terms is a sport that asks for sacrifice and much patience “.
Did some players inspire you? ” I don’t have a specific idol, but Sergio Garcia is my favourite one”.
What is the pourpose of your golfing career?
” My pourpose is to inspire people, being a role model. I want to be remainder for what I give to people and not for what tournament i win. This means to me being the best player in the world”.
What is your happiest memory? ” as an amateur i won with the british team the European Team Championship, and as a
Professional player i was close to winning the PGA in Wentworth.
What is your favourite shot? He answers me looking straight into my eyes with an enthusiastic and contagious brightness.
” Getting out of the bunker and using long irons – love playing them -“.
What do you do at home in your spare time?
” i love going to the gym, i am traying to build up my body with dumbells and not so much
as with elastic bands. I have to get stronger to avoid injuries and most of all to get a shorter and more
poweful swing”.
How do you like Asiago’s course?
” it’s marvellous, i love holes in which one day you make a birdie and the next day a bogey .
What i like most i hole 11. Everything show excellent conditions and i like playing here, you have such interesting greens with up and down lines not always easy to read”.
We finished up drinking our water and walk together to the driving range .
” have a good round e and enjoy it!!!”. And he comes back with a score of 68 indeed.
